PlayStation has announced exciting new additions to its Plus catalog, set to launch on August 20. Among the updates are three cult classic shooters from the TimeSplitters franchise, including one title making its debut on modern consoles.
To play the TimeSplitters series, you’ll need to have PlayStation Premium, the highest tier of PlayStation Plus. This subscription level grants you access to the classics catalog, which is where the TimeSplitters games are available.
If you’re a fan of first-person shooters like Perfect Dark, upgrading to this collection is a must. The original TimeSplitters, previously exclusive to the PlayStation 2, is making its debut on other consoles with this release. While the sequels were available on Xbox and GameCube, and later through backward compatibility on newer Xbox consoles, this is the first time the original game is accessible beyond its original platform.
The recent additions to PlayStation Plus offer a form of retribution for the TimeSplitters series, especially following the tumultuous history of its developer, Free Radical Design. The studio faced significant challenges, including bankruptcy and multiple ownership changes. After being acquired by Crytek, it was later shut down, only to be revived under Deep Silver, a subsidiary of Embracer Group, with the goal of resurrecting the TimeSplitters franchise. Despite the series’ uncertain future, players can now enjoy the entire TimeSplitters series for free on PlayStation Plus.
PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers have a fantastic lineup of must-play games to explore. “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,” a classic RPG, is available in its enhanced PlayStation 5 version, featuring improved visuals, ray tracing, and faster loading times. “Cult of the Lamb,” a unique dark comedy where you build a cult of charming creatures, has also been added. This update coincides with the game’s major Unholy Alliance expansion, which introduces two-player local co-op.
