Samsung is setting high expectations for its 2024 foldable phones, the Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6, as they aim to surpass the success of their predecessors.
Rumors indicate that the upcoming models will feature the most significant revamp in the lineup’s history, with the book-style Galaxy Z Fold 6 expected to be the highlight. Here’s what we know so far.
It will launch on July 10
Samsung is set to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, the new Galaxy Watch7 series, and the innovative Galaxy Ring on July 10.
This release follows Samsung’s established pattern for their foldable devices, with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 debuting in late August and the Z Fold 5 arriving in early August.
The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is anticipated to be a modest upgrade, maintaining a similar appearance to its predecessor. However, it may feature slightly adjusted screen aspect ratios and a thinner, lighter design.
The device is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, making it the standard chipset for all Galaxy Z Fold 6 models worldwide. Additionally, there could be an enhancement in battery capacity, providing users with longer usage times.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is expected to feature the same camera setup as the Galaxy Z Fold 5. This includes a 50 MP wide-angle camera with a 1/1.56″ ISOCELL GN3 sensor, a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x zoom and a 1/3.94″ sensor, and a 12 MP ultrawide camera with a 1/3.06″ sensor. For selfies, it will have a 10 MP punch hole camera with a 1/3″ sensor and a 16 MP under-display camera with a 1/3″ sensor.
A Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra isn’t coming just yet
Samsung is set to introduce a significant change to its Galaxy Z Fold series by splitting it into two distinct models for the first time. Initially, it was unclear whether the lineup would include a regular Fold and a more affordable version, or a Fold and a high-end Fold Ultra. However, it now appears certain that a premium Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra is in the works. This advanced model is expected to be unveiled alongside the Galaxy S25 in early 2025.
Credible reports indicate that the Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra will be thinner and lighter than its predecessors. It is expected to feature an upgraded camera setup, likely incorporating the 200MP ISOCELL HP2 sensor from the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Details about the rest of the camera configuration are yet to be confirmed.
Rumors suggest that the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra will be thinner and lighter than its predecessor, the Fold5. The new model is expected to weigh just 239g, a significant reduction from the Fold5’s 253g. Additionally, the Fold6 Ultra may feature a Titanium frame, similar to the one used in the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
The Ultra Fold is set to be remarkably slim, measuring just 5.6mm when unfolded and 12.1mm when folded. This is a significant improvement from the current Fold5, which has a thickness of 6.1mm when unfolded and 13.4mm when folded.
A cheaper Galaxy Z Fold6 isn’t coming
Recently, there have been rumors circulating about the potential launch of a Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE, purportedly priced significantly lower than the current Z Fold 5. However, it’s important to note that these rumors may not be accurate or likely.
Revamped Design: Sleeker Frame and Expanded Cover Display
Samsung has made incremental changes to the design of the Galaxy Z Fold each year, but critics argue that these updates have been conservative, causing it to lag behind competitors. Last year, the phone featured a flat-closing design with a slightly widened aspect ratio, showcasing Samsung’s cautious approach to innovation in the foldable phone market.
This year, significant changes are on the horizon for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. Reports indicate a sleeker design, potentially featuring an 11mm thickness when folded, a notable reduction from previous models.
Early renders hint at a device that maintains the essence of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 but with a modern twist—flatter and sharper edges, promising a fresh look and feel.
The recent CAD renders reveal dimensions of 153.5 x 132.5 x 6.1 mm, slightly differing from an earlier report citing a 5.6mm thickness when unfolded. This discrepancy may stem from variations between models, possibly the Z Fold 6 and Z Fold 6 Ultra.
The upcoming model is expected to feature a more conventional 6.3-inch 22:9 cover display, compared to the Fold5’s 6.2-inch 23.1:9 display. Meanwhile, the inner display is likely to maintain its 7.6-inch diagonal size.
